perennial allergens: An allergen that is present throughout the year: indoor allergens, such as pet dander and dust mites, are considered perennial allergens.

pet dander: Microscopic dead skin cells shed by cats, dogs and other pets. Dander is a common cause of perennial indoor allergies.

pollen: A microscopic granule released by male plants for fertilization. Airborne pollen is a common trigger of seasonal allergies.

pollen count: A measure of pollen in the air. Pollen count is the amount of pollen grains in a specified volume of air over a given time.

rhinitis: An allergy characterized by inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the nose.

sensitization: The process by which the body becomes accustomed to a foreign substance or antigen.

sinuses: Cavities located in the face and skull that are filled with air.

sinusitis: An allergic reaction characterized by an uncomfortable inflammation of the membranes lining the sinuses.

skin prick test: An allergy test in which a doctor places potential allergens on the skin and pricks the skin, allowing the allergen to penetrate.
